The original school was built in the 1850s and was named the Fillmore School after President Millard Fillmore. At the time the school was built was for whites only and girls weren't allowed to attend until 1880. In 1883 the school's name changed to McDonogh No. 16 after the local public school system received funds from the estate of John McDonogh. Mr. McDonogh was a local philanthropist whose donation allowed for the construction of many schools in New Orleans. It wasn't until 1962 when the school finally admitted African American children for the first time. In 1978 the school closed its doors due to declining enrollment and that same year became the New Orleans Center for the Education of Adults (NOCEA) until 2005. The current building was constructed in 1908 and stands on part of the original Filmore School site. The building was constructed in the Italian Renaissance Revival style and went through an extensive renovation in 1952. In 2005 the buildings sustained a lot of damage from Hurricane Katrina. That is when the building was converted to a senior apartment community.
This is a Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) property with income restrictions but is not income-based.
