My wife and I enjoyed our two years at Countrybrook. The value was good for the space and we found the staff accommodating and kind.
Our problems began when we left. We gave proper notice and were assured by Toni, the properties manager, that we would receive our refundable deposit back in the mail. We then moved to Illinois and waited for our deposit to come. After 2 months and no deposit, I called the office, where I was told that my new address had been incorrectly copied and that perhaps the check had been sent to a wrong address. I gave the correct address and waited a couple more weeks.
After 2 weeks of no check and no follow up, I called again. I asked Toni if she'd be willing to contact the main office and ask them to void the original check and just send out a new one. She said she'd do so and would copy me on the email. Two weeks later, and I never got an email and, of course no check.
I finally emailed Research Properties myself to inquire about the deposit. Imagine my shock when I was told that the deposit had been used to replace the carpet! This was the first time I was told about that. The carpet had been flooded during our first few months at the apartment and the office had never offered to replace it, just clean and replace the padding. So now I realize that even though my wife and I were good tenants who always paid the rent on time, the apartment was willing to be dishonest with me in order to hold onto the deposit.
My advice to anyone considering living here is to get absolutely EVERYTHING in writing, record conversations about issues, and make sure you have everything squared away before you leave and lose the face-to-face contact. Words can't express how disappointed I am in the management of Countrybrook. I hope others don't share this experience.
