Alice Lloyd College, KY

Though it started as a junior college intended for local students, Alice Lloyd College has since become one of the leading four-year institutions in Kentucky. With a small student population but a dedicated and experienced faculty, the rural school provides a unique and fulfilling university living experience for everyone on campus.

Alice Lloyd College was founded in 1923 by a pair of Northeast natives. The duo intended it to be a place for people living in Appalachia to get a local education, and for the first several decades of existence, it was. However, by the 1980s, it became clear that it could offer more, and it started granting bachelor's degrees. Today, it offers 13 major programs to fit the needs of a wide variety of students.

Perhaps the most significant academic advantage offered by Alice Lloyd College is its small student-to-faculty ratio. With just under 600 students and a ratio of about 17 to 1, each person gets the attention he or she needs and deserves. Furthermore, each student's academic experience is supplemented by a work study program that requires them to work in a variety of different capacities on campus.

In addition to a evolving academic tradition, Alice Lloyd College also offers plenty of student activities for people living in university housing or in an off-campus apartment. In particular, there are a wide variety of student groups and clubs, and the school also has a number of thriving athletic programs.

Alice Lloyd College is situated in the small town of Pippa Passes, Kentucky. Situated in the eastern part of the state, this quaint town is part of Knott County, which has become famous for its free-ranging elk.
