Mount Mercy University, founded in 1928 by the Sisters of Mercy, is a Catholic liberal arts college in the Mercy tradition that stresses the importance of giving back to the community. The college offers more than 35 bachelor's programs and a number of master's degrees. Students can pursue degrees in Nursing, Business Administration, Accounting, Elementary Education and more. Plus the college has a student to faculty ratio of 12 to one, so individuals will be able to form meaningful relationships with their professors and peers. While the college offers university housing, roughly two-thirds of students opt to seek a student apartment in Cedar Rapids.
All undergraduate enrollees are expected to fulfill a core curriculum with three separate components - Portal Courses, Domains of Liberal Studies and Mercy Experience Capstone. The first is a series of courses for first-year students including seminars entitled Avatars of Good and Evil: Stereotypes vs. Reality and The Religious Roots of Political Involvement. The second component includes courses that will help provide students with a well-rounded education, and the third is reserved for students' senior year. Every MMU senior must complete an independent writing project that examines one of the six primary concerns of the Sisters of Mercy (earth, immigration, poverty, women, racism or non-violence).
When students are not busy studying in their college apartments or attending classes, they can check out museums, parks and other attractions in downtown Cedar Rapids. This city has plenty of theaters, restaurants and other nightlife options as well. Since Cedar Rapids is home to a number of colleges, MMU students will have no trouble finding off campus apartments.
