Oakland City University, a Christian faith-based four-year institution founded by Baptist pioneers in 1885, aims to prepare students to enter the workforce while also helping them develop intellectually, socially and spiritually. OCU, located in rural Oakland City, is the only college in the U.S. affiliated with the General Baptist Church.
Students can pursue a variety of majors at OCU, including Accounting and Business Management; Elementary Education and Teaching; Human Resources Management; and Organizational Behavior Studies. Roughly half of OCU students live in on campus university housing, and the other half seek off campus living opportunities in Oakland City and other nearby areas. The larger city of Evansville is about a 20-minute drive from the OCU campus, and many choose to find a student apartment here and commute to class.
OCU has an impressive sports lineup, as the university is an NCAA Division II school. Athletic students can go out for sports such as baseball, basketball, soccer, tennis, cross country, golf, volleyball and softball. There is also a cheerleading team and a pep band. OCU is also a Division I NCCAA school.
Evansville, third largest city in Indiana, is host to many festivals and other fun events all year long. One annual festival, Gemania Mannerchor Volksfest, celebrates the heritage of the city's German population every August. There are also a number of theaters throughout Evansville for students who enjoy live entertainment. The city is close enough that a student living here can easily commute to class at OCU, and those who prefer the quiet, rural atmosphere of Oakland City can easily visit Evansville for the day.
