The Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary started out as the Elkhart Institute in 1894, and has since been through many name changes but still provides a place for those interested in pursuing religious work to focus on biblical studies and leadership training for the church. The institution also offers distance learning for those who prefer to find off campus housing outside of the Elkhart area.
The seminary offers a three-year Master of Divinity program as well as two-year Master of the Arts tracks in Peace Studies, Theological Studies and Christian Formation. The specialty school has a very small annual enrollment of just 141, so students are sure to get to know their peers and their professors quite well in their time at AMBS. While preparing to pursue careers as pastors, missionaries, teachers, evangelists and preachers, students may choose to live in university housing or seek a student apartment in downtown Elkhart.
Elkhart is a relatively small and quiet town, so students will be able to concentrate on their studies. The city is less than an hour away from the coast of Lake Michigan, providing the perfect location when students need to take some time away from an off campus apartment and breathe some fresh air. The lake presents plenty of opportunities for fishing, boating and relaxing by the water's edge.
The city itself has plenty for students to check out, such as museums and theaters, when they're not attending classes or studying in university housing. For example, the Midwest Museum of American Art has more than 200 unique works on display on any given day, from paintings and watercolors to sculptures and photography.
