Known as the Lebanon Seminary upon its founding in 1828, McKendree University is the oldest institution of higher learning in Illinois. Over the years, student living has changed dramatically, as the school shifted from a seminary, to a liberal arts college, and most recently to a university that offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Student housing at McKendree University is supported by the town of Lebanon, positioning students in a small town near the wooded campus, but just 25 minutes from downtown St. Louis, Missouri. The schools proximity to St. Louis and the charms of downtown Lebanon are two factors that inspire some students rent a university apartment in the area.
Today, McKendree University, which has been affiliated with the United Methodist church since its origin, enrolls about 2,000 undergraduates and about 1,000 graduate students, who specialize in a wide variety of disciplines. The school's four colleges offer more than 40 undergraduate majors, 38 minors, several professional programs and master's degrees in business administration, education, nursing and professional counseling. Despite the school's standing as Illinois' oldest college, it shows no signs of complacency with this status. McKendree was ranked as the Midwest's 20th Best College in 2011 by the U.S. News & World Report, and has recently upgraded its campus with amenities like the new Performing Arts Center.
Quality of life at McKendree University can benefit access to off campus housing, which puts students close to some of the gems of Lebanon. Dr Jazz Soda Fountain and Grill lies on the edge of the picturesque town, near many university apartments, offering old-fashioned drinks, a pool table, tunes, and Chicago-style hot dogs.
