Founded in 1872 by Dr. Henry Olin, the Illinois College of Optometry (ICO) has distinguished itself as the one of the largest and oldest continually operating educational facilities in the world dedicated solely to the teaching of optometrists. 135 years old, the ICO remains at the forefront of optometry by providing an unsurpassed educational experience based on the efforts of its faculty, students and alumni.
Students living in university housing or an off campus apartment at the ICO participate in the school's degree programs for Doctor of Optometry and Bachelor of Science in Visual Science. The school also operates joint programs with the University of Chicago and the Illinois Institute of Technology where students may earn graduate and doctorate level degrees in related fields.
Student living and university living at the ICO provide students with direct access to the Illinois Eye Institute (IEI), the principal clinical training center for the university. The IEI offers patients primary eye care along with specialty care for glaucoma, low vision rehabilitation, neuro-ophthalmic disorders and retina-vitreous. The institute also engages in research surrounding eye and vision problems, pediatric eye disorders, contact lenses, age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma.
The university's location in Chicago also places students within reach of famous city landmarks like Grant Park, the Chicago River, Navy Pier, the Field Museum and Willis Tower.
