Thomas University is a coeducational four-year institution located in Thomasville, Georgia. Originally, the school was founded in 1950 by the Primitive Baptist Church, which purchased the estate of the former U.S. Ambassador to Japan. Later, the institution broke away from the church and became non-sectarian, as well as private and independently operated.
Academically, the school offers a broad range of course selection. The focus is on professional development, with programs like criminal justice, business and health services proving popular. However, concentrations in the arts and sciences are also offered.
The school began offering graduate degrees in 1998, attracting a whole new class of students to the Thomasville area, where many chose to rent university apartments. To expand its broadening course selection, the school changed its name from Thomas College to Thomas University in 2000.
Unlike many other colleges in Georgia, Thomas University is not located near the city of Atlanta. It is, however, nearly on the border of Atlanta and Florida. This means that the Gulf Coast is just a short drive away, with Tallahassee being the closest city for many students to visit. Thus, many choose to rent off campus housing, as this provides them with a bit more freedom and independence than the typical student apartments.
