Nestled in picturesque city of Rome, Georgia, lies Shorter University, a private liberal arts university that traces its history back more than a century. The school was founded in 1873 by Luther Rice Gwaltney, pastor of the Rome Baptist Church, and was originally an all-girls institution. Since then, the school has become co-educational and now attracts students from all over the country to the city of Rome, many of whom opt to live in off campus housing.
Dating back to its founding by Gwaltney, the school has considered itself a Christian university. Specifically, the institute of higher learning is affiliated with the Georgia Baptist Convention. For many years the school was known as Shorter College, but given its recent growth spurt, opted to change its name to Shorter University last year.
Student living at Shorter is exciting and diverse. One of the sources of pride for the students recently has been the athletics department. As with many smaller schools, the institute competed in the NAIA. However, they recently received approval to move into the Gulf South Conference in NCAA Division II, which is quite a step up in terms of competition.
The beautiful city of Rome is definitely an advantage for students who opt for off campus living. The city features a number of historic buildings and interesting architecture, making it one of the best places in Georgia to rent a college apartment.
