North Georgia College and State University was founded in 1873 as an agricultural offshoot of the University of Georgia. Six years later, the school became the first university in Georgia to award a degree to a female student. Later on, North Georgia College dropped the agricultural curriculum and became a full-fledged university in the Georgia state school system.
