University of Delaware, DE

The largest institution of higher learning in the state, the University of Delaware is set within the sprawling grounds of a main campus in Newark, with satellite locations in the Delaware cities of Dover, Wilmington, Lewes and Georgetown. The school traces its roots to 1743 - making it one of the oldest colleges and universities in the country - and was officially chartered in 1833. Throughout its long history the University of Delaware has left its stamp upon student living nationwide. Perhaps its most significant contribution, UD was the first American university to offer a study abroad program. Despite the exciting travel opportunity, many students decide to pursue a lifestyle centered around residence life in off campus housing.

About 16,000 undergraduates and 3,500 graduate students enroll at the University of Delaware, and live in either student housing or a nearby university apartment. The university’s size, with seven colleges and three schools, allows students to pursue a wide range of academic majors and concentrations according to their interests. The school has been recognized for its programs in science, business, education, urban affairs and public policy, and was ranked as the 10th best school for chemical engineering by the U.S. News and World Report in 2009. The so-called Public Ivy, is also one of just four North American schools with a major in art conservation.

The University of Delaware’s expansive presence makes off campus housing the locus of much leisure and entertainment for student, offering breweries, cinemas, parks and restaurants.
