The first students of Grossmont Community College near San Diego, California, convened for the inaugural classes in September of 1961 on the temporary Monte Vista High School Campus. Since those some 1,500 scholars-to-be first attended class, many more have decided to rent apartments in the Fletcher Hills neighborhood and matriculate at Grossmont. Nowadays, the school sits on a new campus in El Cajon - bordered by San Diego and Santee - in a peaceful, low mountain range. More than 16,000 students enroll for classes at GCC, in part because of its growing academic reputation, and partially because of the quality of life afforded by apartments in Fletcher Hills.
In four of the past seven years, Grossmont Community College has been voted “San Diego’s Best” community college, according to polls appearing in the San Diego Union Tribune newspaper. The school has shown a commitment to academics, boasting about 60 distinct departments, as well as to the comfortable lifestyles of its campus residents and students renting Grossmont Community College apartments. In recent years, the institution has heavily invested in improving its campus. 2008 brought a remodeled Exercise Science Building, in 2009 the school expanded its parking area, and 2010 greeted students with a new Health and Physical Sciences Building.
