Talladega College, AL

One of the oldest historically black colleges in the United States, Talladega College opened its doors in 1867, and has been building on a tradition of academics and extracurricular activities ever since. Rich in history, the school was founded in Talladega, Alabama, by two former slaves who met with a group of freedmen in Mobile with a commitment to educating the children of former slaves who lived in their communities. At its opening, Talladega College was comprised of a one-room school house that was built using lumber from an abandoned carpenter's shop. The college campus and surrounding Talladega apartments that exist today are a far cry from these humble origins, but the school's commitment to education has lived on.

Today, those who rent Talladega College apartments live on the outskirts of a campus that includes several unique features. Notably, the library's floor is embedded with a mural of the historic ship La Amistad, which school tradition dictates shall never be stepped upon. In addition, the mezzanine houses a collection of Angolan and Nigerian artifacts.

By living in a Talladega College apartment, students are positioned to enjoy an active student body and the treasures of a charming Alabama community. Many students are involved in one of the intramural sports leagues that are organized by the Office of Student Activities, while others participate in or cheer on the Talladega College Tornadoes - varsity teams in baseball, basketball, softball, soccer, volleyball and golf.
