Alabama State University, AL

More than 140 years ago, Alabama State University first opened in Montgomery, Alabama, offering the opportunity for higher education to many more people across the American South. ASU’s first ever class, formed just after the Civil War, was assembled by nine freed slaves, known as the Marion Nine, who worked to give African-Americans the right to an education. Today, more than 5,000 students return to the campus every year, many of whom are searching for an apartment in the Alabama State University area.

Aside from getting access to an institution of higher education, those who attend ASU and live in nearby apartments are able to benefit from the social aspects of the university and specifically become active in the Montgomery community. One of the school’s most notable clubs is the Marching Hornets, a marching band renowned for its appearances during halftime shows at NFL football games. The school’s musical tradition doesn’t stop there. Students who rent apartments near ASU are invited to join the Bama State Collegians, a big band jazz orchestra that was once directed by Erskine Hawkins, a member of the Alabama Music Hall of Fame.

ASU apartments give students the opportunity to engage with Montgomery’s larger community and a wealth of cultural offerings. Many students head into the city to visit the Wynton M. Blount Cultural Park, which includes the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts. Other attractions range from destinations like the Montgomery Zoo to the Hank Williams Museum.
