Living in Kansas
From the high bluffs of the north to the wheat fields of the southwest, Kansas has something for everyone.
Topeka and Shawnee County
The capital city of Topeka boasts plenty of water sports, history and great food. Residents of Topeka and surrounding Shawnee County enjoy commutes well under the national average, so you'll have extra time to enjoy all the features this riverside city has to offer. If you love being outdoors, your decision to rent an apartment in Topeka was a good one. For water sports, travel to nearby Lake Shawnee for water skiing, rowing, sailing and fishing. There are more than 90 parks in Topeka that feature swimming pools, hiking and jogging trails, tennis courts as well as several public and private golf courses. In a downtown Topeka, you'll find many museums and landmarks, such as the interactive Brown vs. Board National Historic Site and Museum. The area is also home to several popular local restaurants, such as Globe Indian Cuisine Restaurant, Pepe and Chele's Mexican Restaurant and The Rendezvous Grille.
Lawrence: Small Town, Big Art Scene
Maybe you'd rather explore the small college town of Lawrence, located in northeast Iowa. The National Endowment for the Arts ranked Lawrence 12th in percentage of artists in the workforce. Here you'll find that art is truly integrated into daily life. Lawrence has its own charm and amenities, and there are several local museums and many historical attractions, such as the Spencer Museum of Art on the University of Kansas campus, as well as opportunities for outdoor recreation. There are trails to hike and bike, parks to camp in and beaches to relax on - all around a lake that's 3 miles south of Lawrence. You can go swimming, boating or fishing in the lake's more than 7,000 acres of water. Lawrence prides itself on offering all of the cultural and historical opportunities you've come to expect of a large city, while retaining the friendliness of a small town.
Wichita: From Cows to Airplane Corporations
Move to Wichita if you enjoy history, sunny weather and plenty of outdoor recreation. You'll delight in the western heritage of "Cowtown." The city was so-nicknamed because of the large number of cattle drives from Texas to the Wichita area. You'll feel history come alive when you experience the museums, landmarks, food and cultural events in Wichita. The Old West heritage is strong in Wichita, but western stores aren't necessarily the biggest guns in town these days. Today, Wichita is more commonly known as the "Air Capital of the World." That's because the city is home to Boeing, Cessna, Raytheon and Bombardier Aerospace's Learjet. Learn about the history of aviation and see historic aircraft and aviation memorabilia at the Kansas Aviation Museum. Among the many museums worth a visit are the Great Plains Transportation Museum, the Mid-American All-Indian Center and the Wichita Art Museum. For outdoor exploration, visit the many wildlife observation areas, such as the Eagle Valley Raptor Center, the Sedgwick County Zoo and the Tanganyika Wildlife Park - an interactive zoo where you can feed giraffes, ride a camel and more.
