Living in Hawaii

From the beaches of Diamond Head in the south to the perfumed pineapple fields of the central state, there are many beautiful places on the Hawaiian island of Oahu.

An island paradise

You'll discover an island paradise in Honolulu, the capital city of Oahu. This bustling city is rich in culture and tradition. Honolulu remembers and honors its past, from royal palaces that tell the story of Hawaii's monarchy to Queen Kapiolani Park in the heart of scenic Diamond Head and a statue of surf king Duke Kahanamoku that is decorated with fresh leis daily. Take a surf lesson, go sea kayaking, swim or just bask in the sun on world-famous Waikiki Beach. When it comes to dining, check out specialties, such as ahi tuna, macadamia nut-encrusted steak and island favorites like pulled pork and Spam.

The world's most beautiful beaches

On the windward side of the island you'll find the scenic beach town of Kailua. The town is situated between Kailua Bay and the Koolau Ridge mountains, just 30 minutes from downtown Honolulu. Lanikai beach is arguably one of the world's most beautiful beaches with swaying palm trees, crystal clear water, soft swells and twin islands that are popular destinations for kayakers, windsurfers and (strong) swimmers. You'll find the spirit of Aloha alive and well in Kailua, where the speed of daily life is slower than on the mainland. Hawaii residents are known for being friendly, and a great place to meet neighbors is at the Thursday Farmers Market. Kailua is irresistibly charming.

Jungle mountains in Kaneohe

For an extraordinary view of the mountains and lush, almost jungle scenery that's also close to beaches, you may prefer to find an apartment in Kaneohe. This medium-size city is located next to Kailua and is home to three golf courses and banana farms. Fish off the Heeia Pier in Kaneohe Bay or take a kayak to explore Mokolii (Chinaman's Hat) Island. Visiting the Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden, where you can enjoy hiking trails that wind through this 400-acre garden of Eden at the foot of the Koolau Mountains. Walk the garden, feed the koi or meditate at the Byodo-In Temple, a gorgeous, exquisitely maintained replica of a 950-year-old Byodoin Temple in Uji, Japan.
