And if you’re living in an apartment, you want to make sure you have the basics without taking up too much room or burning through your bank account. Here are our tips on how to purchase budget-friendly kitchenware, as well as a list of the essentials every apartment dweller needs in his or her kitchen.

• Cookware sets can be a waste of money if you’re not planning on using every single item in the set. Instead, purchase solid, decent quality pieces as you can afford them, since they’ll last longer. Before getting started, ask yourself questions like: What do you cook, what’s your cooking style and how often do you cook? This will help you determine which pieces you actually need.
• Check your local discount store for deals, like T.J. Maxx, Marshall’s and Ross. In addition to offering already discounted merchandise, these stores will often offer additional deep discounts on items that have minor scratches or dings and dents, so keep an eye out.
• You can find uncommon cooking accessories, like bamboo steamers, spider strainers, tortilla presses and rice cookers, for rock bottom prices at your local Asian or Hispanic market.
• One of the best places to find kitchen items for lower-than-retail prices is at restaurant supply stores. While they mainly cater to restaurants, some locations are open to the public. Find one in your area and call ahead to make sure you can browse their selection.
• Sometimes you can pick up great pieces at garage or estate sales if you know what to look for. You might have to sift through a few duds, but the patience will pay off when you find that near mint condition Le Crueset Dutch oven for cheap.
• Deal-of-the-day sites like Woot! or 1 Sale A Day offer some amazing discounts on choice items. If you’re not sure where to start, Google “deal of the day” along with “cooking” and sort through the results.

6 Best Kitchen Gadgets for Small Kitchens
The Only 16 Kitchen Gadgets You Need

Now that you’ve got the basics, here are our picks for the five pieces of cookware that will have you covered in the kitchen, without breaking the bank.

Chef’s knife: A good, high-quality chef’s knife can chop things quickly and more efficiently, making your life easier in the kitchen. Pick up one that’s at least seven inches long with a stainless steel blade and a textured, slip resistant handle, like the Victorinox 10” Chef’s Knife ($26.65 from Amazon).
Dutch oven: This hefty workhorse of a kitchen gadget is one of the most versatile around. It can be used for any cooking technique as well as marinating, refrigerating and freezing. The Lodge Color 6-Quart Dutch Oven is one of the more budget-friendly offerings, and comes in several bright colors to coordinate with your kitchen décor ($49.97 from Wal-Mart).
Large, heavy skillet: If you’re cooking in a small kitchen, you may think the idea of a 14-inch skillet is too much, but having a large skillet will ultimately save time because it evenly cooks food, meaning you won’t have to cook in batches. The Cuisinart Chef’s Classic Stainless Open Skillet features steel riveted handles that stay cool on the stovetop ($28.24 from Amazon).
Bamboo cutting board: A sturdy, large cutting board is a must in any kitchen because it can be used to cut vegetables or fruit or carve meats. The OXO Large Bamboo Cutting Board features handles and nonslip edges as well as a juice canal to keep your counter clean ($22.49 from Target).
Measuring cups: We love this OXO 3-Piece Angled Measuring Cup Set. Perfect for wet or dry ingredients, the cups feature soft, nonslip handles, and the angled surface makes reading the markings from the side or the top easier ($20.00 from Williams-Sonoma).

Save time during the week by preparing your meals on a day when you don’t have as much going on, like Saturday or Sunday.

A Crock Pot is a Busy Cook’s Best Friend. Most people only use their crock pots for an occasional roast or an annual dish for some special occasion, but crock pots can be a terrific time-saver in the kitchen. Throw in a chicken or roast and some veggies the night before or before you leave for work, and when you get home you’ll have a piping hot meal ready to serve. It’s not just for roasts and soups either. Crock pots are great for cooking chili and even spaghetti sauce.

Let Double & Freeze be Your Mantra. Make this your new rule in the kitchen. Get yourself in the habit of doubling recipes. Make one for tonight, and freeze the rest for later. Then, when you’re too busy to cook one night, just grab it from the freezer and heat it up.

Switch it Up. Try breakfast for dinner or some other mindless meal, like sandwiches, one night.

One Meat, Many Dishes. You don’t have to eat the same meal over and over again throughout the week. Throw a chicken in the crock pot and make some barbecue chicken and chicken salad to take to work the next week or to put in your kids’ lunches.

Go Canned or Frozen. Canned and frozen vegetables can be stored for longer periods and are easy to prepare or add to your favorite recipes.

Cook Several Meals at Once. Save time during the week by preparing your meals on a day when you don’t have as much going on, like Saturday or Sunday. You can easily knock out those nights’ meals plus get a jump start on the rest of the week. Put them in the freezer or fridge, and then all you have to do during the week is take them out and reheat.

These simple shortcuts will help you save time and money and have more time to do the things you enjoy, such as spending time with your family.

Consider giving a bottle of wine with a personalized label as a housewarming gift.

When a friend or relative moves into a new place, it can be hard to come up with a nice housewarming gift for them. Below are a few ideas for creative, decorative housewarming gifts to help your loved ones feel right at home in their new apartment.

Start your apartment search today!

Go Green
Plants always make a nice, thoughtful gift and can add a bit of life and color to a new place. If the recipient doesn’t have a green thumb, opt for something relatively easy to take care of, or an indoor plant such as a fern, cactus or bonsai tree.

Silver Lining
Silverware and stemware are perfect housewarming gifts, especially if your recipient likes to entertain. Additional items like napkin rings and candleholders can also add another layer of elegance to their table, and they’ll think of you every time they bring them out to use them.

Art is the Key
Decorative key holders are a nice housewarming gift and can add some artistic flair to any home. They’re also something the homeowner isn’t as likely to have already. Choose a key holder made of metal or wood with an artistic design.

Grape Expectations
Wine is a great housewarming gift, as long as you put a personal spin on it. Consider giving a bottle of wine with a personalized label. Many local and mail-order wineries allow you to customize the bottle’s label to reflect your friend’s exciting move or some other memorable event.

Photo Finish
An old photograph of you and the recipient, placed in a nice, decorative frame, makes a great, personalized housewarming gift.

Be Practical
A small kitchen appliance is a great practical housewarming gift. Before you give a particular appliance, make sure your recipient doesn’t already have one.

For Old Favorites: Netflix Streaming
Back in the olden days, we used to get one or two discs in the mail periodically from Netflix, but no longer. While that option is still available, who wants to wait few days in between catching up on episodes of True Blood? Netflix streaming is the best way to get caught up on old shows. You can even stream movies, and the best part is it’s only $7.99 per month. Watch instantly on your computer, or connect devices like the Wii, PS3 or Xbox 360 to watch your favorite shows right on your TV. Unfortunately, not every series is available for streaming, especially new ones, so be prepared.

For New Series: Hulu Plus
Just as Netflix is perfect for getting caught up on old TV shows, Hulu Plus is great for getting addicted to new ones, as they generally have the most current shows available. At just $7.99 a month with no commitment, you’ll have access to all current season episodes of many hit shows, hundreds of popular classic shows and thousands of award-winning movies.

For Reliability: Roku
The great thing about Roku is that you can stream various channels right to your TV without purchasing a gaming system that can cost hundreds of dollars. The box itself isn’t too expensive (from $49.99) and there are no monthly fees, so once you make the initial purchase, it’s all yours! It’s one of the most reliable streaming devices on the market, and there’s something for everyone. You’ll find movies and games as well as larger networks like HBO, CNBC and Showtime, and even inspiration and fitness channels.

For DVR Capabilities: Channel Master
Channel Master uses antenna technology to transmit many TV channel options for free, so it’s like having cable, only without the pesky monthly charges. The only downside is the set up and installation fees, which could cost you several hundred dollars, but after a few months, this system will more than pay for itself. One of the advantages of the Channel Master is its built in recording capability, so you’ll never miss your favorite shows again. You can pause live television, record up to two channels at once and fast forward through commercials.

For Fringe Benefits: Amazon Instant Viewer
If you’re a member of Amazon Prime, then you instantly have access to a number of great TV shows and movies, right at your fingertips. While not all of them are free, the ones that do cost money are available for only a nominal fee, so double check the prices before you click anything. And if you’re an avid online shopper, you’ll enjoy other benefits like free two-day shipping and no minimum order size in addition to unlimited instant streaming of thousands of movies and TV shows for just $79 a year.

For the Newest of the New: Google TV
The newest product to hit the streaming television market, Google has teamed up with Hisense to release a low-cost Google TV box, known as the Pulse. This box really does it all: customers can stream television shows and movies as well as access web content through the Wi-Fi connection, all for under $99. And, it will ship with a double-sided remote, complete with full QWERTY keyboard on one side and a touchpad and dedicated Netflix button on the other.

DIY Unique Jewelry Displays

Is your jewelry jumbled in a pile? Use our ideas to properly display (and show off) your jewelry.

Is your jewelry jumbled in a pile? Use our ideas to properly display (and show off) your jewelry.

Long necklaces, long earrings, studs, rings, bracelets and bangles…oh my! How do you organize your jewelry? Do you dump it all in a drawer or hang your necklaces around a door handle? Do you often lose one earring in a pair? We have a few suggestions for not only organizing your jewelry but also putting it on display. Below are a few unique do-it-yourself and repurposing projects to properly display (and show off) your beautiful jewelry.

Cheese Grater
Sounds strange, doesn’t it? This one is rather simple, but it’s an easy and unique way to display your earrings. You can make it your own by spray painting the grater with a color that goes well with your décor. First, spray paint the grater with a primer. Once it is completely dry, cover the grater with a color of spray paint that you like. Let that coat dry, and if needed, add an additional coat of spray paint. Use the holes to display your earrings.

Branch
This one is simple, and you can use supplies you may already have around your apartment. First, head outdoors and search for a small branch. Next, hammer smaller nails into the branch on the same side. To attach to your wall, hammer two larger, stronger nails into the wall, and prop the branch on the nails. Next, hang your necklaces from the nails on the branch.

Rake
To continue the theme of repurposing old items, enter the garden rake. Living in an apartment means not having to worry about raking leaves in the fall. So repurpose that old rake and turn it into a jewelry holder. Take a head of an old rake and clean it off. If you’re feeling spontaneous, prime and spray paint the rake to match your décor. Next, tie jute twine around the top part of the rake for extra earring storage. Mount the rake head with a screw onto the door of your closet or on the wall. Use this to hang your necklaces.

Knobs
Craft stores, antique markets and stores like Anthropologie all have collections of old door knobs, drawer knobs and drawer pulls. Install small knobs on the wall to hang your necklaces and bracelets. Select three or five different knobs that go with your décor to display your jewelry. Drawer pulls are perfect for rings and earrings.

Picture Frames
You have several options to display your jewelry using picture frames. One way to display your earrings is to attach picture wire to the back of a frame. Use an old frame, if possible, and repaint it with acrylic or spray paint. Attach picture hanging wire to the back of the frame with a staple gun. If you don’t have a staple gun, use small thumb tacks. Repeat this step several times until your frame is filled up. Space the rows about 2.25 inches apart. Place this on top of a dresser, chest of drawers or your bathroom counter.

Another option is to attach a peg board to the frame. Prime and spray the picture frame to match your décor. Next, attach a peg board to the inside of the frame with Gorilla glue, and apply some weight. If you want the peg board to be a different color, paint it before attaching it to the frame. Then, attach small accessories to the peg board, such as baskets and hangers. The baskets are useful for rings, bracelets and stud earrings. Use the hangers to display your necklaces.

Throw a Budget-Friendly Party in Your Apartment

Save money on party invitations by hand delivering them to the people you see regularly.

Save money on party invitations by hand delivering them to the people you see regularly.

As the New Year is just beginning, it’s the perfect time to think about budgets, saving and taxes. But tightening up the purse strings doesn’t have to mean the end of fun. Birthday parties, dinner parties and showers are great ways to get a group of friends together and socialize in your apartment, but hosting a party can also be costly. Here are our tips on how to throw a great party without spending a lot of money to do so.

Make it Count
It may seem like a no-brainer, but determine how much money you actually want to spend and stick to that figure. Coming up with a budget will help you limit your spending to things you really need for the party, so you’ll be less tempted to splurge on unnecessary items, like that custom ice statue or face cake.

Keep Track
Once you’ve settled on a dollar figure, make a detailed list of everything you’ll need. Be as specific as possible when making your list, but make sure to stick to things you need, not things you want. Taking your list along with you while you’re shopping will keep you organized and prevent impulse purchases, allowing you to easily stick to your budget.

Spread the Word
If you’re sending out invitations for a casual party, websites like Evite or Punchbowl are free and do all the heavy lifting for you. For a more formal occasion where printed invitations are appropriate, stay on budget by making them yourself. You can purchase blank invitations for cheap, or make custom invitations and have them printed online at Vistaprint. Save postage by hand-delivering invitations to guests you see regularly.

Set the Mood
No party is complete without decorations, but there’s no need to spend an arm and a leg on them. A little can go a long way in this department, so pick up a few balloons and some streamers at a discount or dollar store. Instead of paying for helium, you can blow up the balloons by mouth and scatter them around your apartment. For nontraditional decorations, visit a local craft store and pick up some artificial flowers to place in vases you already have lying around your apartment, or purchase cheap grocery store carnations and jazz up by placing in a pretty bowl. Or, fill clear vases with water, drop in a few drops of food coloring to match your theme and place small, cheap floating candles inside for a unique centerpiece for a dinner party. If you are throwing a shower or a birthday party for someone, decorate using childhood and current pictures of the guest of honor. You can even make your own decorative bunting with fabric scraps, ribbon and a needle and thread.

Serve it Up
Save money on food by doing the preparation yourself rather than getting it catered or picking up prepackaged snacks. Buy fresh fruits and vegetables and cut them up rather than splurging on an expensive tray, and make your own dips. Or, turn the party into a potluck and have guests bring their favorite dishes while you supply the drinks. A punch-type cocktail like sangria can be made in advance and the ingredients purchased in bulk, which can be a time saver and cheaper than trying to stock a full bar. Purchase soda and water by the case at a discount or wholesale store like Costco, and buy beer by the keg. While it may make cleanup more difficult, using real dishes and utensils that you already own will cut down significantly on your costs.

Host a Budget-Friendly Night In for New Year’s Eve

Host a cozy New Year's Eve gathering in your apartment without breaking the bank.

Host a cozy New Year’s Eve gathering in your apartment without breaking the bank.

Do you have family and friends in town for a visit? Is it your turn to have the neighbors over for New Year’s Eve? While we may look forward to the celebration itself, planning a party can be daunting if you spent too much over the holidays. But hosting a budget-friendly evening from the comfort of your home or apartment doesn’t necessarily mean handing out paper hats and streamers made from last weekend’s newspaper.

Here are a few tips for hosting a cozy gathering that your guests will remember without spending too much.

Go Potluck
While you should definitely provide a few appetizers and snacks (crowd pleasers like Chex Mix and popcorn cost little and make large portions), ask your guests to bring their favorite dish or cocktail to share. Not only will this save you money, but guests can also bring homemade recipes or unique foods that will start conversations and make your party more personal.

Ask the Experts
If you’re offering alcoholic beverages at your party, stop by your local wine or liquor store and ask for assistance from someone who works there. Mention your budget and ask for a recommendation within your financial limits based on their experience and customer feedback. Many shopkeepers will also help you pair a wine with the food that you’ll serve—and their advice is free!

Get Crafty
The Internet is a treasure trove of decorating tips, how-to videos and DIY advice for party hosts on a budget. Just because decorations are handmade, doesn’t mean they can’t look elegant. For inspiration, search YouTube or Pinterest for party decorations or favors that you can make for your guests and check out popular craft blogs. We found these pretty Clementine candles that would be perfect to illuminate your space or give as gifts.

Use What You’ve Got
Chances are, you already have many items that can help your party feel more festive. Before you put away your holiday decorations, fill clear bowls and vases with your leftover ornaments. Glass balls, tinsel or colored lights in white, silver or blue are always pretty. Keep everything coordinated by selecting only one or two colors to use throughout your space. You can also place shoeboxes, paint cans or containers of different sizes on a buffet or long table and cover them with a tablecloth to create risers for food and serving platters.

With a little planning and some imagination, you can transform your home or apartment into a welcoming atmosphere for an evening of fun! The key to a great party is the guests’ experience, not how much you spend.

In for the Eve: Create the Ultimate New Year’s Staycation

Have yourself a merry little New Year's Eve at home this year.

Have yourself a merry little New Year’s Eve at home this year.

While friends are out party-hopping, spending $100 per ticket to see a ball, peach or other object drop and trying to find a taxi on New Year’s Eve, you’ll be at home, watching all the action on television. Maybe you don’t feel like fighting the crowds, spending too much money or freezing while standing in long lines, but whatever the reason, the warmth of your living room and comfort of your fleece socks sounds more enticing. Whether you have no parties to go to or just don’t want to leave your house, you can still have an amazing time staying in for the night with our tips below.

Opt for New Year’s Eve kitsch
Stop by your local party supply store and purchase noisemakers, confetti bursts, actual confetti, New Year’s Eve glasses and New Year’s Eve hat – the more outrageous, the better. Invite a friend over for your New Year’s Eve staycation and when the clock strikes midnight, shout “Happy New Year!” and try to set everything off before a minute passes.

Know your shows
Whether you want to ring in the New Year with news, music or actors, television has quite the realm of entertainment to choose from:
• “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2012,” 8 p.m. EST on ABC
• “NBC’s New Year’s Eve with Carson Daly,” 10 p.m. EST on NBC
• “NYE in NYC 2012 Live,” 11 p.m. EST on MTV
• “New Year’s Eve Live with Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin,” 11 p.m. EST on CNN
• “American Country New Year’s Eve Live,” 11 p.m. EST on Fox

Make party-worthy food
Just because you’re staying in doesn’t mean you can’t indulge in delicious party food. Have yourself a merry little New Year’s Eve dip party with crudités, toasted baguette slices and tortilla chips, along with hot corn dip, pan-fried onion dip and buffalo chicken dip. If you’re getting a head start on your New Year’s resolution to lose weight, opt for a vegetable tray, baked corn chips, baba ganoush, red pepper hummus and a lighter hot artichoke spinach dip. For serious indulgence, heat up a delicious pot of cheese fondue, made with Emmenthaler, Gruyere and white wine, and serve it with Granny Smith apple slices, toasted bread and slightly steamed broccoli. Take the whole pot into your living room and enjoy it while watching the New Year’s Eve festivities on TV.

Purchase bubbly, of course
No New Year’s celebration is complete without champagne or sparkling wine. If you’re on a budget, Freixenet Cordon Negro (under $10) and Cavit Lunetta Rose’ ($11) are excellent choices, according to Serious Eats. Make your drink pop by adding a splash of Framboise (raspberry liquor), peach nectar, pear juice, passion fruit juice or kirsch (black cherry brandy), and dropping a whole raspberry in the glass. Alternately, purchase a celebratory beer, such as Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale, Deschutes Jubelale or Anchor Christmas Ale, which even says “Happy New Year” on the bottle.
