It might be the summer’s most obscure holiday, but August 26th is annually recognized as National Dog Day. The day was started 9 years ago by Colleen Paige, a pet lifestyle expert, to honor dogs that serve the community: law enforcement canines, blind companion dogs and service dogs for the disabled.
Even if your dog doesn’t fall into one of those categories, your pooch still deserves to be rewarded for being man’s best friend. While there are plenty of suggested ways to celebrate National Dog Day, below are Apartment Guide‘s ideas for games you can play in (or near) your apartment with your furry friend.
The Muffin Tin Game: This game is perfect for testing your pup’s problem solving skills. Take a clean tin muffin pan and place treats inside at least one of the round nooks. Place a ball over all the muffin compartments. Tell your dog to “go!” and watch as he figures out how to find the treats. This video is a great example of how The Muffin Tin Game works.
Hallway Fetch: This classic puppy pastime isn’t just for the backyard. Indoor fetch is ideal for the dog who has never played fetch, or the canine that isn’t very good at it… yet. Head to the hallway and toss Fido’s favorite toy in the opposite end. If he’s not amused, entice him with a treat a few times to get him in the habit of returning the toy back to you.
Red Light, Green Light: If you live with a roommate, let him or her join in on the canine fun with this childhood favorite. At the end of the hallway, place your dog beside you in a sit/stay position. Have your roommate stand at the opposite end of the hallway giving commands. Who can make it to the end of the “street” first – you or Fido?
Get out: If you prefer spending quality time with your dog outside, let him accompany you on your walk or run. If possible, take a different route or visit a new trail or park. Dogs need to experience new sights and smells.
