Simplifying your Apartment Search
A little preparation can simplify your apartment search.
Plan Ahead
Is a washer/drying hook-up essential? A fireplace? An on-site exercise facility?
Where in town do you want to live?
Will your new neighborhood meet your needs?
Take copies of your credit report, resume, and pay stub or tax return.
Provide a list of references (after asking if they're willing to vouch for you).
Take Your Time
Visit and inspect potential units during the day. Daylight can reveal flaws that might be hidden during darker hours. You'll also see how much natural light it gets.
Return at night to see if the parking lots and stairwells are well lit and if the community looks safe.
Be patient and thorough on your walkthrough. The best time to discuss required improvements or repairs is
before
you sign the lease. Being thorough in your walkthrough now allows you to make a list of damages you can attach to your lease, absolving you of responsibility when it's time to move out.
Ask questions. Basic questions to ask the leasing agent include:
How is the water pressure?
How large is the water heater?
How big and how many closets are there?
Is parking assigned by unit or free-for-all?
Make Yourself at Home
Introduce yourself to your new neighbors - it's a great way to find out about the neighborhood.
Measure your rooms and doorways before you buy furniture for your new home. And make sure to measure furniture in the store!
