Guide Your Apartment Search.

Jazzing Up Your Pad

Turn your apartment into your home, your crib -and have fun doing it. Creativity and budget are the keys to getting your TV off that cardboard box and expanding your wall coverings from tapestries and rock posters to something less likely to scream college dorm room.

Decide your budget. You can change your look without breaking your bank account. And without looking like you were on a tight budget. Evaluate your space. Do you have small rooms or an open floor plan? Hardwood floors and high ceilings? Or wall-to-wall carpet, low ceilings and minimal windows?

Since most apartments are usually made of small spaces, think about limiting your color palette. Use pale colors. You don't have to be boring, but don't over decorate by using too much color. It will make your space feel cluttered. Especially if you have rooms that don't get a lot of light.

Use mirrors, light colors on your walls, plants and sheer curtains to help brighten up dark spaces. Also, consider getting a two-in-one piece like a sofa bed or a futon to save space. Keep dark and crowded spaces where they belong...in the subway.

Add character. Like photos or hand-made art. Or textured and organic accessories to spice up your living space. Clean lines, open spaces, non-busy fabrics and shades of the same color will give your apartment a contemporary, well-designed feeling.

Buy some plants. They're attractive, help clean the air and bring texture to your space. If your apartment is small and dark, prune them regularly so they don't start to take over the space.

Container gardening is great for apartment living. Plants can live in your windowsill or on your balcony and can come inside when it gets cold. Don't forget to water and fertilize them. Plants need nutrition too.
