Know what makes people feel best about themselves? Doing something for someone else. Seriously. Don't believe us? Volunteer. There are many worthwhile organizations all over the world and even in your neighborhood that need your help. You can get involved globally or locally.
If you don't know where to get started, get online. There are many Internet resources ready to match you and your interests with a volunteer opportunity in your area (such as at a local church, in an after school kids association, in a community garden, at a homeless shelter, at an animal shelter, at the YMCA or in a elderly care facility) and who knows, maybe even match you with another hot volunteer (yes indeed, you heard it here).
Besides a possibility of finding a love connection, there are countless reasons to volunteer. People need you. Your efforts can have a profound impact on someone else's life. And your life will be profoundly affected too. By profound, we mean insightful, intense, intellectually and emotionally stimulating -- all good.
If you're looking for a real adventure, you can volunteer abroad, with international organizations like the Peace Corps, the United Nations Volunteers, CARE, the Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders or other international relief organizations. Many of these require a lot of time, patience, paperwork and interviews to secure your volunteer spot. In the end, it's worth it.
Know what else? The eVolunteering revolution is here. Meaning you can volunteer in person or virtually. You can get involved without ever leaving the comforts of home. So if you're lazy - errrr... prefer being home and volunteering - you can still do good things that will help other people and organizations. And all those people who are kind enough to lend their helping hands.
