It helps the security guards to know the residents, and maybe he or she will be more apt to take a second glance at your apartment or car next patrol.

If you need a personal security alarm or gated complex to feel safe, make sure you include that in your list of criteria when starting your apartment search. If the apartment you're moving in to doesn't have a security alarm system, you can always get one installed. There are companies out there offering this service -- just research the market and find the best option for you.

Other proven safety measures:

• Never leave your door open or unlocked when you go out.

• If you ever suspect there's someone in your apartment, do not enter it. Call the police immediately.

• Don't ever buzz anyone in that you don't know.

• Don't leave a spare key outside.

• Get renters insurance. It's not expensive, but will help you a lot in case if something happens to your place.

• Don't leave your curtains or blinds open so that someone can see the possessions inside your apartment.

• Always be alert. If you see something or someone suspicious, call the landlord or security guard.

• And for heaven's sake, always make sure you close and lock all your windows and doors, especially when you're not there.
