Establishing Credit

There's a catch 22 to credit. You need to have had it to get more of it. Car loans, mortgages and even credit cards can be hard to get if you haven't established a good credit history. But it can be done. Otherwise, who's been buying all those cars and houses?

Getting utilities in your name is one way to establish credit history. And credit cards for department stores and gas stations are usually easier to get than other credit cards. So apply for one. And ask someone to co-sign for you.

Paying off any credit card every month shows that you handle credit responsibly. If you can't pay it off, make sure to pay on time and to pay down the amount you owe.

There are three major credit bureaus - Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion - and they control all things credit-related. Make sure any utilities or department stores you have accounts with report their information to the credit bureaus. Otherwise, you won't establish yourself with good credit.

You can get your credit report for free online at annualcreditreport.com. If you're trying to build your credit-worthiness, review your credit report at least once a year. If you see any errors, take quick steps to correct it. Errors can take months and many headaches to clear up.
