Richard Bland College is a public junior college located on the outskirts of Petersburg, in eastern Virginia. The institution was established in 1960 as a branch of the College of WIlliam and Mary, and as of the early 1970's is the Commonwealth of Virginia's only public junior college. Richard Bland, a Virginia statesman, founded the school to provide two years of student living and higher education which would lead to a transfer to one of the commonwealth's four-year colleges or universities. Today, approximately 1,400 students enroll at RBC and reside in student housing on campus and throughout the area. Petersburg is a city of about 32,000 residents, that is known for the architecture in its Old Town district, and a lively community theater scene. Off campus housing is available surrounding Richard Bland College, in the residential neighborhoods that are located about five miles south of downtown Petersburg.
In the school's mission statement, Richard Bland College states that its "curriculum is intended to allow students to acquire junior status after transferring to a four-year college or to pursue expanded career opportunities." A main component to student living the college has formed formal credit transfer agreements with more than a dozen Virginia institutions, including William and Mary, Old Dominion, Virginia Tech, Virginia State University, Virginia Commonwealth University and James Madison University. RBC confers Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees in variety of disciplines, from accounting to theology.
In 2008, Richard Bland College became Virginia's only junior college to offer student housing on campus. However, since capacity is limited to fewer than 300 students, college apartments remains a preferred residence. Students who reside in off campus housing share a neighborhood with several large ponds, the Petersburg Golf Course and lots of peaceful Virginia terrain.
