Established in 1959, the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio is the largest health sciences university in Southern Texas. Located at the South Texas Medical Center, the Health Science Center serves an enormous area in South and Central Texas surrounding San Antonio. The school also ranks in the top three percent of worldwide institutions receiving funding from the National Institutes of Health.
The university’s stated mission is “to make lives better through excellence in education, research, health care and community engagement” - employing strategies that train students to become effective leaders in health sciences and medicine in order to improve the knowledge and health of people around the world.
Those living in student housing or an off campus apartment at the Health Science Center have access to the university’s more than 65 graduate and professional degrees in the biomedical and health sciences fields. The Health Science Center is comprised of five smaller schools including the School of Medicine, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the School of Health Professions, the School of Nursing and the Dental School.
The university is also home to the Cancer Therapy & Research Center - part of the National Cancer Institute. The center’s Institute for Drug Development is known worldwide as the premier oncology Phase I drug trail program.
