Oakland University was initially created in 1959 thanks to a donation from the late Alfred and Matilda Wilson to Michigan State University with the hopes of founding a new college in Oakland County. The school was originally known as Michigan State University - Oakland and located on the Wilson's 1,5000-acre estate. The main campus was situated in the city of Auburn Hills and remains there today. In 1963, the school was renamed Oakland University by the state legislature.
