Find Colma, California apartments for rent!
Colma, California, offers apartment residents a quiet and serene environment in what's become known as the "City of Souls," thanks to its reputation as the home to a number of cemeteries.
There are 18 different burial grounds in Colma - including one dedicated to pets - which make up 73 percent of the town's 2.2 square miles. Officials told the New York Tiimes that while the city has just 1,500 residents, it has another 1.5 million underground.
The development of the city was shaped the decision by lawmakers in San Francisco to eliminate cemeteries from the city. In 1900, officials banned the construction of any more burial grounds in the city limits. Twelve years later, they passed a second law, requiring all cemeteries in the city to be moved outside of the city limits. While it was billed as a way to prevent disease, the real reason for the laws, according to town historians, was that officials felt that the real estate was too valuable to leave alone. As the gravesites moved, the those in the industry moved into Colma apartments, and the town began to grow.
While the situation can seem somewhat morbid to some, those residing in Colma apartments have a unique sense of humor about the town's situation, and have even adopted the saying, "It's great to be alive in Colma."
The final resting place of many famous celebrities is located within the city. Colma apartment residents can pay a visit to the graves of baseball legend Joe Dimaggio, William Randolph Hearst and famous gunfighter Wyatt Earp.
